Last year it was Christie wearing #5 and this year it'll be Holloman. Isn't it a forgone conclusion that Cassius Winston will have his number 5 retired? Until then, why isn't this number being put on ice?

I don't know. For as great as Winston was, he never won a championship and his NBA career won't happen probably. It is an unlucky matter of circumstances that he wasn't able to go to a second final four because of COVID but those are sort of the breaks. MSU also doesn't usually retire numbers while the locker is still warm like at Iowa with Garza.
I suspect if Winston ends up having his number retired it will be after Holloman has already finished. And if not, Holloman will just switch numbers or ask Winston permission to keep it until he finishes.
Wasn’t Winston the starting PG for 3 consecutive conference championships and 1 conference tournament championship? I think he also left as the all-time conference assist leader. I hope MSU retires his number. He deserves it.
His number will be retired. Not a doubt in my mind about that. It’s not unusual for it to not happen immediately and for guys to wear that number in the interim. See Xavier Tillman wearing #23 as a recent example.
I like that Holloman took #5 for his jersey. I am sure he knows what that number means to fans, and he welcomes that pressure. When we discuss which player will be the biggest surprise this year, I think Holloman might creep into that conversation during the season.
@hazelmotes I have expectations for him to be sure. I think he'll be in the rotation.
At some point, you gotta retire the "jersey" and not the number. So put "Winston #5" in the rafters but let other guys wear #5. Loophole.

Good point, otherwise they'll eventually run out of numbers. Not only a MSU problem, but a Y2K type problem for all sports leagues/teams.

Kentucky has already started doing this. The school has retired 38 jerseys, but a few of the players shared the same number. The numbers 12 and 24 were worn by two different players with retired jerseys and 44 was worn by 3 players who have retired jerseys.
