We are so far out of the pandemic at this time that we need to seriously look at no longer giving teams a pass on COVID. For young men it is really an upper respiratory viral infection. Forcing a reschedule in an already compact regular schedule puts opponents at a huge disadvantage.

NW just canceled their matchup with Iowa who has been one game behind the rest of the league anyway. Forcing them to make this game up is ridiculous.

I think it’s fine for teams to say we don’t have enough players - but then you either forfeit or suit up the walk ons. The Big Ten needs to change this policy. Probably too late for this season but it has to be changed before next.

I agree unfortunately the Big Ten is more concerned about loss of tv revenue than untenable scheduling. Perhaps the next BIG commissioner will figure out scheduling, health and welfare of student athletes and tv revenue that is a bit more rational and reasonable. But don’t hold your breathe.
I do see Covid a bit differently than you. Unlike other injuries or illnesses that athletes can suffer Covid is easily transmissible to anyone. Considering that athletes are in contact with more than just other young athletes isolation/ quarantine is essential regardless of how the infected athlete is affected. If you don’t reschedule you encourage athletes to not report positive test or symptoms to avoid forfeiture. Playing with Covid should not be encouraged.

I truly understand the concern you have for spread to those vulnerable. However, I’m genuinely curious (because I know many share your view including those at the Big Ten) what needs to change in order to alter the policy?

For instance, we know COVID is endemic and will forever circulate within the human population. Mitigation efforts can’t stop its spread any more than they can stop other URIs or viruses like influenza.

Do you think this will be a forever policy with the Big Ten? And then other questions are the COVID policies between schools similar? Who’s getting tested and when? Do they use a close contact policy to rule people out? Is this consistent in every school/athletic department?

I am interested if what’s driving the policy? Inertia? Metrics based on population health or hospital admissions, etc?

Let me start by saying I don’t have good answers to your questions because Covid hasn’t been handled well by the NCAA nor the Big Ten from the beginning. The NBA showed the way to do it but the NCAA opted for a half ass approach and got a half ass season as a result. Now the people in charge haven’t learned anything from the mistakes made and are continuing half assing it as evidenced by teams still getting Covid and using absurd policies.
What needs to happen is for bold leadership at NCAA and Big Ten to come forward and admit they handled Covid wrong from the beginning and they are going follow CDC guidelines for all sports even the ones where big money is involved. Then competitive fairness will be enhanced.

The likely scenario above is around zero. NCAA is too caught up in NIL and BIG is in limbo with Kevin Warren leaving.

You might think I’m being too strict by suggesting CDC get involved but I come from a unique background. I’m an athlete and I work for GA DPH on the Covid team. I can tell you Covid has a greater affect on athletes than you realize. Bingham and Christie were out with Covid . Once they return their play was diminished. Christie missed shots that he made before Covid particularly hitting front of the rim which probably means he wasn’t getting lift off his feet. Why is this happening for more than one game? He also made uncontested turnovers. Poor focus?

I could go on about the year before when 13 out of 15 MSU players had Covid at some point and everyone pointed at Izzo for coaching poorly.

The NCAA failed to study affects of Covid on athletes. Just testing who is positive was never enough and because too much money could be lost they downplayed the problems. Go back to 2020-21 and watch coaches lift up their masks so they could yell at their players. What was the point of having a mask on at all? Then a couple days after a game someone comes down with Covid but rarely is it revealed symptoms or affects. Did anyone get an xray, blood test or any other medical test?
Perhaps no athlete died but that doesn’t mean that damage wasn’t done. I have an above average VO2 max that allows me to do arrobic activities at a high level. Damage that and I can walk around normally but I wouldn’t keep up with my sporting  peers . I assume it’s the same for college athletes.

I could say more but it would  be too much for this forum. I hope this doesn’t answer your questions but rather causes you to ask more.
