(Posted on the Mag board but wanted it here as well although people don't seem as down about him here)

I'm a little tired of everyone bagging on Mady Sissoko contending that he can't rebound, has bad hands, etc. Statistically, Mady is above average for rebounding on the team and not the black hole many on this site and elsewhere are saying. I will agree that he isn't an elite rebounder or someone with much of an offensive game at this point.

To prove my point I looked at his stats and compared them historically to past and current Spartans and even other teams they've faced. I did not account for offensive or defensive splits just raw rebounds. The math was simple, divide rpg by mpg to get rebounds/minute.

This year's team rebounds/minute stats (note that not everyone played every game and there are rounding changes so the r/m individual stats won't match)
Team 0.91 rebounds/minute
Mady S. 0.31 r/m
Joey H. 0.22 r/m
Carson C. 0.13 r/m
Jaxon K. 0.27 r/m
Jaden A. 0.14 r/m
Malik H. 0.15 r/m
Tyson W. 0.08 r/m
AJ H. 0.13 r/m
Pierre B. 0.13 r/m
Tre H. 0.11 r/m

But then how does Mady stack up to previous MSU centers who were considered good rebounders?
2018-19 Team: Kenny Goins 0.29 r/m, Xavier Tillman 0.3 r/m
2021-22 Team: Marcus Bingham 0.34 r/m, Joey Hauser 0.24 r/m Julius Marble 0.23
1999-00 Team: Andre Hutson 0.23 r/m Charlie Bell 0.18 r/m Morris P. 0.21 r/m AJ Granger 0.18 (here I think the numbers are deceptive for Hutson because the wings rebounded at a profound level)

How about if we compare him to some of the monsters he's gone up against this year? (admittedly, their above or below average results are not entirely dependent on Mady)
Zach Edey 0.42 r/m against Mady - 0.45
Oscar Tshibwe 0.43 r/m against Mady - 0.53
Hunter Dickinson 0.27 against Mady - 0.23
Clifford Omoruyi 0.34 r/m against Mady - 0.39

In summary, Mady isn't terrible. Does he give you a lot as far as offensive production in the paint, not really. But he does just about everything else pretty well except when he is going up against giants for the boards.

If Mady wasn’t up to snuff rebounding Izzo would talk about it and reduce playing time, he hasn’t done that. Social media has allowed ordinary fans to become loud pundits. Thanks for doing the work showing what really is happening. Magic works because we rely our eyes and our lack of knowledge. Apparently many fans are easily fooled by magic because they lack knowledge.

I'm glad you laid this out, Eric.  The idea has been dumb all along, but it's nice to have some irrefutable numbers to go with it.
