This is a futile but fun exercise.  So, let's give it a shot.

From last year's team, we're losing 49 minutes per game (that takes Hauser's, Brooks' and Whitens' minutes averaged over the full 34 games).  So, we'll have those minutes to divvy up among four newcomers plus then also need to consider a general redistribution among returning players.

Hoggard 28

Walker 28

Akins 28

Walker and Hoggard averaged 30.6 and 34.0 minutes respectively.  I'm dialing that down to utilize depth and to ensure everyone stays fresh throughout not only each game, but the season in general.  Akins averaged 27.5 in the games he played, but some of those were influenced low from injury.  I think Akins may very well prove to be the team's best player this coming year.  I see him playing similar minutes to Hoggard and Walker.

The above leaves 36 minutes to split amongst Holloman, Fears, Normand, Carr and, to a lesser extent, Hall.  I'm imagining Hall will go back to the 4 and see some but not much time at the 3.  That's due to Hauser's absence, returning him to his position the previous three years, ensuring more minutes for Akins and because of our general depth at the wings vs. down low. My inclination is to give Holloman and Fears more minutes than Normand and Carr.  However, Hoggard's 28 provides for 12 minutes of a backup point whereas there's 24 minutes behind Walker and Akins.  I don't think Holloman is suited to a non-point slot and I really don't know about Fears.  A further development of AJ's three-point shooting may very well be a critical factor in creating minutes for Holloman and Fears.

Holloman 6

Fears 12

Holloman's 6 is a reduction from this past year's 8.6 and is the hardest one to peg as I'm a Holloman fan.  I believe he has experience that can be trusted and he's a willing & competent defender, both big deals to Izzo.  However, the minutes just aren't there if he can't also fill in on the wing.  Absent foul trouble to others, his minutes next year will depend on either clearly beating out Fears and/or being able to play some shooting guard.  As far as Fears, I haven't seen him play, but I have no reason not to believe the hype.  Giving him 12 minutes (after Hoggard's 28 and Holloman's 6) means he'll have to co-exist with AJ and/or Holloman on the court for 6 minutes.  That's a stretch guess on my part more based on not being able to keep him off the court given everything I've heard.

Carr 10

Normand 5

Hall 3 (at the 3-spot only)

Shooting matters and supposedly Normand has it.  However, we already have guys that make jumpers and we don't have guys of Carr's size and athleticism (Jaden is as athletic but not as big).

Hall 20 (taking him to 23 minutes total with his minutes at the 2)

Booker 20

Jaren Jackson averaged 21.8 minutes as a freshman.  Supposedly, Booker has as much talent but may be in need of some refinement.  This is another hard one, limiting this guy to 20 minutes.  It's equally as hard to limit Malik to 23.

Sissoko 15

Kohler 15

Cooper 10

The three guys respectively averaged 21.4, 10.7 and 5.9 over the full 34 games (that includes the DNPs into their averages).  Once again, another hard one.  My estimate is more than a copout.  It'll depend heavily though on matchups from game-to-game.  Sissoko is the safe choice while the development of all three will be fun to see.  The questions are can Kohler improve as a defender and have a green light shooting from the outside (which will help open him up underneath) and will Cooper & Sissoko be able to make strides on the offensive side.

Last year, MSU averaged 40.6 minutes per game due to overtime games.  So, while the above doesn't include any mop-up minutes for Smith, Izzo and Sanders, I'm assuming the minutes from overtimes will provide for these three.  Given this team, there will likely be a lot of mop-up minutes.  However, expect those mostly to go the 12 guys above and expect to much more rarely see Smith, Izzo and Sanders.  Hopefully, Izzo can get a bucket before the season is up.

I will be curious to see not only how Izzo distributes minutes, but also how he uses various players. This team has a lot of players who can play multiple positions.

At least 4 guys could see some minutes at the point: Hoggard, Holloman, Akins, Fears and Walker

Wings can include Holloman, Akins, Walker, Hall, Carr, Normand

Possible PFs include Hall, Carr, Booker, Kohler, and Cooper

The following could see at least some minutes at center: Kohler, Sissoko, Booker, Hall, Cooper

Most of the upper class men are likely to get 24 minutes a game or more, and the underclass men could all deserve minutes but they may need to show they can play at least 2 position to get double-digit minutes.

The potential lineups for next year are fun to consider:

Best Offense: Hoggard - Walker - Akins - Booker - Kohler

All Defense: Walker - Akins - Holloman - Hall - Sissoko

Best Running: Hoggard - Fears - Akins - Carr - Cooper

Most Athletic: Walker - Akins - Normand - Carr - Sissoko

Best Shooting: Walker - Akins - Normand - Hall - Kohler

How many strong 3-point shooters are on this team? Last year MSU had 3 players with above 40% 3-point shooting (Hauser, Akins, Walker). Can we have 3 again next year with similar volume?

I am wondering if the freshmen are being told that their minutes will be limited but they will learn a lot about playing at this level in their first year AND they will be getting such good NIL money that they are comfortable with it.
