To me this was a surprising article looking at the number of fans each college had.
First, MSU is sixth overall in the country which is a reflection of the size of the schools and the success of its football and basketball teams.
Surpassing UM is surprising since I feel like UM dominates the media coverage and bias. Maybe that’s a reflection of where more journalists and those running these organizations went to school?
By far the most troubling for UM has to be the enormous disparity in gen Z fans with MSU holding a 3:1 edge.
Ultimately, the survey really shows why the Big Ten holds such a massive market share of football eyeballs. Sorry ESPN.
I can't believe the younger generation isn't lapping up that hot daily content from Wojo, Angelique, and Mitch like their grandparents did.
While I love the result, from the linked article I can't discern much about the quality of the data. What are they using to measure/classify "fans?" How robust was the research? Guess I'd have to go to the actual source and I might do that, just to satisfy my own curiosity.
This is hard to believe, but I'll take it. Growing up a short drive from Lansing as a 70's grade school kid, the number of UofM fans greatly outnumbered those of us who were MSU fans. At minimum, growing up a combined MSU / Detroit Lions fan during that period took a lot of patience and dedication as there was certainly a lot of losing to deal with.
In more modern times, there is much to appreciate about all the good times and quality entertainment that has been able to be enjoyed as a direct result of Tom Izzo and Mark Dantonio. If the ratio of MSU to UM fans has improved, those two deserve all the credit.
